Karaoke has been around since the 70’s. Love it or hate it, karaoke is quite popular and some people take it very seriously. The problem for me, however, is that I don’t sing (at least not very well.) As a result, I have never stood in front of people in a karaoke bar and belted out a song. I’m afraid that if I tried to sing 'Yesterday' or 'My Way' (two of the most requested karaoke songs in Japan) people would laugh. And trust me, they would!
Imagine my concern when the karaoke function was added to Clavinovas several generations ago, and I was asked to introduce this new feature to the United States. I was mortified until I came up with an idea: let me make software where people are supposed to laugh, and call it 'Kooky Karaoke'!
What is 'Kooky Karaoke'?
In its basic form, 'Kooky Karaoke' software retains characteristics of basic karaoke: sing into the microphone when you see the highlighted lyrics on the built-in screen of your Yamaha instrument, as it plays the backing tracks.
But how is Kooky Karaoke different? Kooky Karaoke includes features and characteristics that have never been available in regular karaoke bars to make singing more fun, more exciting, more foolproof, and more 'kooky' as a result.
Yamaha Clavinovas and Digital Workstations have several exclusive features that makes this possible. This includes voice modification, vocal harmonization, vocal effects and pitch correction. By combining all of these really cool features into one 'Kooky Karaoke'

Voice Modification
The Voice Modification feature can make anyone sound like a different person. Even when using your normal voice, talking or singing into the microphone, what comes out of the instrument is quite different! You can sound like Popeye, Barry White, Bing Crosby, the Grinch, Shirley Temple, Munchkins, and Chipmunks, just to name a few. Of course 'Kooky Karaoke' also includes the appropriate backing track that goes with the voice. There’s an emphasis on fun novelty songs that were made famous by the silly voices we have created - that means including the song 'You’re a mean one, Mr. Grinch' when using Boris Karloff voice or 'You Were Always On My Mind' while using the Willie Nelson voice.
Vocal Harmonisation
The Vocal Harmonisation feature adds up to three additional harmony parts using the sound of your own voice! You are essentially singing along with three other 'clones' of your voice, each at a different pitch. The pitches are embedded in the song’s 'Kooky Karaoke' MIDI file. This is used in 'Puff the Magic Dragon' - Peter, Paul and Mary singing backup harmonies based upon your original voice! This is also how you are able to have Alvin, Simon and Theadore back you up in three part harmony using their classic Chipmunks voices in the classic hit the 'Witch Doctor'.
Vocal Effects
There are other Vocal Effects like automatic vibrato. If you sing with no vibrato, 'Kooky Karaoke' will add vibrato to your voice for you! This is the effect that makes the files sound so incredibly believable and life-like.
Pitch Correction
There is even a way to Pitch Correct your voice. No matter how far you sing out of tune, this feature forces your voice to the pitch of that melody. Four half steps off? No problem! Now anyone can sing in tune!
